Binky Paxton from Banbridge needed the services of the Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) team back in 2019.   Binky had a fall out her back doorsteps in 2019 and need to have an induced coma at scene followed by brain surgery.  Binky is well known in the area as she owned the dog boarding kennels in Blackskull, which sadly she had to close following her accident. However she has made a remarkable recovery and is now a wonderful ambassador for the charity Air Ambulance NI, continually raising awareness and looking after collection boxes in her local area.

Now, Binky has decided to challenge herself even further and is taking on the 8-Mile walk as part of the Mash Direct Belfast City Marathon on 30 April 2023.

Binky said, “This is a big challenge for me following the fall as I am not just as physically able as I used to be, but I am so passionate about the air ambulance and keen to do all I can to support.  My consultant told me I would have been unlikely to survive without the intervention of the HEMS team that day and no one ever knows when they or a member of their family may need their services.  I hope that others will join me in the walk or challenge that suits them, and help sustain the air ambulance service for everyone.”

Kerry Anderson, Head of Fundraising with Air Ambulance NI said, “If you’re thinking about taking part in any of the Mash Direct Belfast City Marathon events next year sign up before the end of November 2022 to avail of the early bird rates.  You can choose from the full marathon route of 26.2 miles, the Team Relay and the 8-Mile Walk.  Registration is also open for the Mash Direct Belfast City Half Marathon on 17 September 2023.  When you register at www.belfastcitymarathon.com/ you will be asked if you would like to support Air Ambulance NI.  When you tick the box, we’ll be in touch with your digital fundraising pack and invite to the air base.
